Sony prepares to officially announce its new flagship smartphone, the Xperia 1 VII. Expected to be powered by the era’s most elite Snapdragon 8 Elite processor along with an IMX989 main camera, it is going to come back out as one of the crucial thrilling smartphones of the yr. The phone is currently scheduled to launch in Japan on May 15, 2025, but according to leaks, the global rollout could be pushed until July, potentially disappointing overseas fans in Europe and beyond.
From all appearances Snapdragon 8 Elite should deliver some serious performance improvements. In preliminary Geekbench tests, the phone was a monster, crushing competitors such as Xiaomi’s Poco F7 Ultra with 2967 single-core and 9017 multi-core scores. Add in 12GB of RAM and the brand new Android 15 operating system, and Sony has what should be the best-in-class contender. Top features are a high-quality cinematic-grade 6.5-inch 4K OLED display with 120Hz refresh rate and a 52MP main sensor for the rear triple camera array.
Rumored to make its debut in Japan first per reports including Sumaho Digest, the Xperia 1 VII would match the timing of prior launches. The worldwide rollout – notably in Europe – might get pushed back into Q3 of 2025, with July seeming the most feasible. This unusual delay has swirled around it all sorts of rumors of supply chain problems, or intentional marketing ploys, none of which Sony has currently commented on. The U.S. release schedule is just as murky.
In terms of design, the Xperia 1 VII has kept Sony’s/proto-notes recognizable boxy design and huge bezels, and will be offered in Black, Navy Green and a new Purple hue based on the Xperia 1 IV. Leaked images from Taiwan’s National Communications Commission reveal that the phone will feature exciting new audio capabilities, a classic 3.5mm headphone jack, and longer battery life, with advertised claims of as much as five hours more than the Xperia 1 VI.
One of the notable features from the RX100 cameras ported over to their large flagship main camera is better zooming and low-light capabilities thanks to a new Exmor T sensor spanning all three rear camera lenses combined with AI for better final output. There’s speculation outside of this news that Sony will be revealing the Xperia 1 VII (and maybe more) with its WH-1000XM6 headphones on May 15, making it even more anticipated as an event. Despite the potential wait for global release, the Xperia 1 VII’s impressive feature set gives it plenty of bite to take a bite out of Apple, Samsung, and Google’s latest flagship releases. Fans should continue to keep their eyes peeled for further information as the release date in Japan approaches.
