Vivo X Fold 5 Debuts World’s Thinnest Foldable, Now Idiot-Proofier

Step aside, Samsung—Vivo just stitched up a first in foldable history. This is because the Vivo X Fold 5, unveiled yesterday in China, isn’t your average bendable phone. It’s the lightest book-style foldable ever (217g! Retina display, Business-ready and life-ready. It’s loaded with a huge 6,000mAh battery and wait for it—syncs seamlessly with Apple’s ecosystem. Yup, you read that right — your Apple Watch, AirPods and even Mac might soon work with an Android foldable.

With the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 just as the top competitor, Vivo’s play is quite intentional. Can the X Fold 5 finally deliver enough to dethrone Samsung once and for all? Here’s why… Let’s break it down.

– Displays – Two large sublime screen experiences, split between the gorgeous 8.03-inch 120Hz LTPO AMOLED folding display (soooooo smooth) and the slightly smaller 6.53-inch external screen, both crystal clear brightening out to a dazzling upward of 4,500 nits peak brightness. Netflix binges just got a whole lot fancier.

– Performance : Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, up to 16GB RAM, and 1TB storage because why wouldn’t you have these things. You want a foldable that will make 90+ percent of the competition look downright slow?

That 6,000mAh battery isn’t just large—it’s Foldable world record large, with 80W wired and 40W wireless support. Oh, and it’s IPX8/IPX9 waterproof (eat your heart out monsoon).

— Primary camera — A triple 50MP f/1.9 Zeiss-tuned primary cam that’s flanked by a dope periscope lens 3x optical zoom. Even the most quaking hands can’t go wrong with these images.

The Apple Turn that Nobody Saw Coming

Apple Watch support. Connect it once to an iPhone, and you can read notifications, health data, and respond to text messages from your Vivo. AirPods have been available since late last year, but as the Apple announcements today, we can expect the devices to work with the Mac soon through a software update.

Is this the first real Android-iPhone bridge? Maybe so, maybe not, but it all depends. Whichever it is, it’s a  godsend for multi-platform users .

Chic, Slim, and (Practically) Shatterproof

At 217g & 9.2mm thick (folded)Unlike the foldable X Fold 3 Pro and almost every rival, it’s much lighter at 260g, making the device easy to carry around and use effortlessly. Their clever hinge antenna design even guarantees you won’t lose calls on high speed trains (Vivo claims 99% signal fluency). Colors & Connections represents a departure from our standard fare. Once more, this isn’t a feature unique to the camera, but indulge us for a second and allow us to set the scene. Pine Green, White, or Titanium—all with a sexy boomerang-shaped, Zeiss-branded circular camera bump.

Samsung’s For the first time, the foldable king — Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series — is facing serious competition. The X Fold 5 tops the holy trinity: Read more on weight, battery, & ecosystem flexibility. Early impressions on X (formerly Twitter) are praising its “groundbreaking” slimness, and leaked production plans suggest Vivo’s gunning for India just as fervently as it plans to snatch Samsung’s foldable crown.

We know that your eyes have been on the foldable that doesn’t make you choose a side — Android or Apple.
