A foldable iPhone, reportedly Apple's first foldable smartphone, is expected to be released in 2026 and, likely, it will start production in the second half of that year.
The next will be in book-like design, as with Samsung Galaxy Z Fold models—not a clamshell or flip design, as analyst Ming-Chi Kuo speculates. The inner display is mentioned as having a diameter of approximately 7.8 inches when opened with the outer (cover) display possibly being approximately 5.5 inches.
The major area of concern seems to be durability and refinement. Premium materials will be expected like titanium alloy to form the body and possibly stainless steel in hinge mechanisms. Another aspect is that the inside display could have few visible crease, this is one of the problems that have postponed various designs of foldable phones.
Security-wise, rumors have it that this foldable will replace Face ID, the facial recognition system created by Apple, with a side-mounted Touch ID sensor, presumably to conserve internal space.
This will definitely be a high-end model as far as cost is concerned. It is projected to be priced at USD $2,000 to USD 2,500, which would make it the most expensive Apple phone should the estimates be accurate.
Apple is also said to be looking at test manufacturing in areas such as Taiwan and then upgrading. There is nothing official about it yet, but the indications are favorable: the foldable iPhone may become the next significant step in the Apple hardware product range.
