Just after the upgrade, I did notice that my system got laggy and some features brought privacy issues. In order to streamline performance and security, I actually turn off all these five features in each initial installation.
First, I disable the Background Apps. Quite a number of pre-installed applications are also background applications; they eat up CPU and memory. Under Settings > Apps > Installed Apps, I disable and turn off the running of any apps that I have no need to turn on. This gives me more resources and my system feels faster when doing things such as gaming or video editing.
Then I turn off Telemetry and Data Collection. This can make windows 11 a bit slower and privacy concerns arise because windows 11 by default collects usage data. In Settings > Privacy & Security > General, I switch off all the options in the section under Let apps show me personalized ads and reduce diagnostic data to the minimum. This limits the data tracking of Microsoft and lowers load of systems.
Third, I turn off Startup Programs. Applications that start at boot can make the start-up process quite slow. With Task Manager Startup tab, I deactivate the default applications and unnecessary programs such as OneDrive or bloatwares. This will make my PC boot quicker and reducing resource consumption right away.
Fourth, I disable Visual Effects to have a slim experience. Animation and transparency effects of Windows 11 are gorgeous yet punishing low-end hardware. I then get to Auto > Computer > System > Advanced System Settings > Performance Settings and choose the option to adjust for best performance or manually turn off effects such as animation, shadows etc. The outcome is a prettier responsive interface.
Lastly, I turn off Windows search indexing to perform faster file search. Indexing may consume disk types, particularly on older disks. On Services, I disable or set windows search to manual so that I can use manual searches when required. This enhances the performance especially on HDDs.
By turning off these functions, you can make Windows 11 fast and secure and still not sacrificing features. It is all the better to test them!
