iPadOS 26: The Tablet to Be Your Next Laptop

iPadOS 26, which Apple just announced, is a massive turning point in the history of the iPad because the upcoming operating system update will include a number of features that position the slate tablet of Apple as a bona fide alternative to the laptop computer. With that sort of high-end multitasking, app windowing and flexibility in input that people have been insisting on being able to do serious work for years since having it on iOS, iPadOS 26 has, after years of design and iteration, addressed that very frustration.

The most significant one is the improved desktop-level multitasking: In iPadOS 26 it is now possible to create, resize, and even drag about app windows, something that is closer to the Mac experience than ever. and this window mode, along with enhanced keyboard and trackpad support, would enable effortless multitasking in a way that would compare to the use of a traditional laptop.

A redesigned Files app will provide desktop-capable file management that will support external drives as well as provide a granularized permission system on folders. Third-party and Apple pro apps make better use of hardware and multitasking enhancements, and so video editing, code, and powerful design are now viable to do on iPad. Heavyweight VPN, user profiles, and sandboxing of apps bring iPad security and personal business boundaries an inch or two closer to that of a MacBook, to the enterprise user.

Performance is no longer a worry, since with hardware such as the latest M-series chips inside the iPad Pro, and with software as well-written as is the case with iOS 12, the only thing to worry about is whether or not it would be able to sustain what the hardware can deliver. iPadOS 26 is another challenge to the mobile industry because Apple is strongly intimating that the iPad is now in a position to replace laptops. It runs the full spectrum of workflows allowing it to potentially replace the MacBook as a pro tool, but to most users, it is more than capable of being their primary computer whether they are students or mobile creators.
