We all have some of these old USB drives we have probably forgotten about since they no longer satisfy the current large storage requirements. You can always reuse these little gadgets in some ingenious and sensible applications way beyond file-saving, and you can do it in the garbage bin.

It has also been found interesting to create a bootable rescue drive out of an old USB. You can also use it to restart a computer that has crashed by installing a lightweight operating systems or troubleshooting software. It can still boot a bare bones OS in case of emergency despite having limited space.

The other fun thing you can do is to turn your USB into a portable app launcher. Some applications, such as browsers, password managers or text editors, are also portable. You may save them in the drive and drag your own work environment everywhere, without having to install software in another computer.

With a flash-drive DIY, a security key can be made out of an old flash drive. Using free software you can set it up as a lock and unlock device to your PC. One can do it by just plugging it in to reach your computer and then pull it away to lock the system which is a very easy method to add an extra security measure.

USBs can also be used by creative minds to turn into novelty gadgets. Others place them on key chains, toys or even jewelry and make them an odd gift or a way to start a discussion.

They can be recycled as learning tools by teachers and trainers- such as loading them with offline tutorials, presentations, or even coding exercises (students do not necessarily have internet).

Finally, an ancient USB may be used as a digital time capsule. Put photos, notes or videos of the present day, seal it and open in years later and be surprised to see a throwback.

The old fashioned USB drives can be given a second life with a bit of imagination in a very practical and entertaining way.
