NVIDIA driver causes Forza crashes: fix & hardware impact

Players who have expensive PCs powered by NVIDIA graphics cards have complained of constant crashes when pursuing Forza games such as Forza Horizon 5 and Forza Motorsport. The problem started when they switched to more recent Game Ready drivers - users report that their game would randomly crash to desktop many times after 30-60 minutes of play.

A widely used workaround has been to revert to an older driver (such as version 561.09 or older), which is reported by many players to allow stability once more.  Some have achieved superior performance with ray tracing disabled, frame rate (e.g. 60 fps) or G-Sync/VSYNC off.

Hardware-wise, this problem brings to focus the effect of graphics driver updates which have the potential to instabilize otherwise viable systems. The higher-end GPUs (such as RTX 40-series and beyond) of the rig of Forza players can easily handle the games, but the new drivers apparently cause some kind of compatibility or resource-management bug--so the games crash not because of the hardware failure but because of the software/driver interaction.  A user on the Microsoft forum reported a regular crash pattern (after around 40 minutes), and thought that it was driver or memory-resource related.

Formal Forza team support will focus on the verification of driver conflicts, overlays, third-party software, corrupted files, windows updates etc.  In the meantime NVIDIA has admitted that some of the reason to produce so many hotfix drivers (e.g. of RTX 50-series) is to address exactly these stability problems in so many games.

What you should do:

  • In case of crashes, roll-back to a known stable version of NVIDIA driver.
  • Switches the lower ray tracing off or sets it temporarily.
  • To test stability, cap your frame-rate and turn off adaptive technologies such as G-Sync/VSYNC.
  • Ensure that you delete overlapping/monitoring software that can be conflicting.
  • Always update your system (Windows + game) and at any time a new Game Ready driver is released by the companies, always make sure to check out the feedback by the players before updating.
